From the Editors, the Festival Chair, and the President
Kathy and Mark McMillan
First and foremost I'd like to say that I hope everyone has a very fun and entertaining weekend March 8th to 11th at the
16th Annual Kamloops Cowboy Festival. As usual there is lots in store. If you're a repeat guest you'll find lots of
familiar faces, events, and happenings. You'll also notice a few changes, find some new and exciting things on the agenda,
and see some new faces in the lineup of entertainers. If this is your first time at the Festival all I can say is enjoy!
And I'm sure you'll soon be a repeat.
Huge thank yous must go out to all of our sponsors - check out the list and try and thank them, or better still, try and
support them throughout the weekend. Also this event would not be possible if it wasn't for the extremely committed and
hard working board of directors and all the many volunteers that help put this always growing Festival together. If you
see a blue or red coloured name tag, and/or a red cowboy neck rag, take a second to say hi and meet the volunteer wearing
it - they'd be happy to talk to you.

Watch for the "Red Scarves" and smiling faces of our volunteers...
We are welcoming you to the 16th Annual Kamloops Cowboy Festival. We will be there to point the way and assist you to see

through our doors. We have been looking forward to renewing acquaintances and the good times we share together over the
weekend. We feel fortunate to have such a loyal following.
From all of us to all of you, have a wonderful weekend!!

Art of the West Show & Sale
Sponsored by Canadian Cowboy Country magazine
This year we are privileged to be able to present an increased number of western flatwork artists - 15 artists with
29 entries. The caliber of submissions is always high and this year is no exception. There will be a chance for the
public to express its views with the "People's Choice" Award.
We will also be presenting a larger number of bronze western sculptures (6 pieces by 3 artists) which always lends an
additional dimension to the representation of traditional cowboy life. As well, this year two of the five saddles
which can be seen in the gallery will have been created by amateur crafts persons. It's always exciting to see a new
generation continuing old traditions. As well five photographers will be entering 12 photographs.
Our show committee is composed of artists in varied mediums and we are looking forward to some innovative touches
within the set-up of the gallery itself. Our list of very qualified judges consists of; Susan Max, Doug Strand,
John Schnurrenberger, Randy Kerner, Bill Briggs, and Andy Knight. We welcome the opportunity to put together this
wonderful collection of artwork devoted to the preservation of the western way of life and look forward to seeing
each of you at the 2012 Art of the West Show & Sale at the Kamloops Cowboy Festival.
For a full list of names and biographies of Artists taking part in the Canadian Cowboy Country Art of the West Show
and Sale see the Artist's Bios Page.

BC Cowboy Heritage Society Student Scholarships
Scholarships provided by BCCHS have helped many promising students to fulfill their dreams and contribute to society. In
the process those who enter increase their awareness of our BC cowboy heritage and the role of the cowboy and ranching in
our history.
Entries are received from all over the Province: Some from people who are a part of ranching families, and, at the other
extreme, from people who have never left the city they live in but have done considerable research on which to base
their entry.
This year we have approximately forty qualified entries. Entries can be in any of three categories; original art,
crafts, and the written word. Up to three scholarships are awarded. This might be one in each category or all in a
single category. This year's judges are Scott Mann, Sherry Carrol and, the Chair of the committee, Doug Halliday.
There are some excellent entries this year so the decisions were tough. The results are:
Art - Sofiya Kominko of Burnaby, for a painting
Cowboy Craft - Riley Kynoch of Merritt, for a saddle
Written word - Monica Nederend of Delta, for a short story
The winners will each receive $500.00 towards future education and the awards will be presented at the Kamloops Cowboy
Festival during the main evening feature show on Saturday, March 10th, at the Calvary Community Church.

Joe Marten Memorial Award for the Preservation of Cowboy Heritage in BC
The recipient for 2012 will probably come as no surprise. It is the very deserving Mike Puhallo!
The BC Cowboy Heritage Society is proud to be able to once again present the Joe Marten Memorial Award for the
Preservation of Cowboy Heritage in BC. The Society's mandate is to promote and preserve cowboy heritage in the
Province of BC and this award is an excellent way of recognizing anyone that participates. Mike undoubtedly fits
the requirements of this award.
The award will be presented on Saturday, March 12th during the evening main feature show at the Calvary Church. Join
us to help honor Mike Puhallo, the 2012 recipient. Last year the award went to a very deserving photographer and
author, Liz Twan.
We would like to thank Traudl Marten for sponsoring this award. She will be at the Saturday evening show to present
the award.
Mike Puhallo
There could be no one person as deserving of an award for promoting and preserving cowboy heritage in the province of BC
than Mike Puhallo. The space allotted here is not nearly large enough to go over the list of ways that Mike contributed
to BC Cowboy Heritage.
|
|
Mike was one of the founding members of the BC Cowboy Heritage Society and the Kamloops Cowboy Festival. He was
instrumental in starting the BC Cowboy Hall of Fame and the BCCHS Student Scholarship program and spent many years
as president of the society. He was a cowboy, a rancher, an artist, a horse trainer, an historian, and of course we
all know him as a cowboy poet.
Mike performed far and wide ... he attended gatherings and festivals all over North America, performed in schools,
libraries, community halls, brandings, coffee houses, stock shows, and even biker's BBQs ... always spreading the word
and educating people on the cowboy way of life, the culture and history of the real west.
Magazines, newspapers, TV shows, and web sites all l over North America carried stories that Mike had written. He always
had something to contribute if an editor was looking for information about ranching or

the western way. He also spoke at
dinner functions and other events and took his poetry into school classes combining it in a fun and easy way for kids to
learn ... including roping lessons in the class room (not meant to be used on teachers).
Mike is Canada's most published Cowboy Poet with six books and three CDs to his name. In 1998 Mike was nominated for Best
Western Song (Cinnamon) as well as Best Cowboy Poetry Book of the Year. In 2001 Mike was voted in for the third year in
a row as one of the finalists for Cowboy Poet of the Year at the prestigious Will Rogers Awards, in Fort Worth, Texas and
was also nominated for Best Cowboy Poetry Book and Best Cowboy Poetry Album. His book "Piled Higher and Deeper" received
the 2002 Will Rogers Medallion Award. In 2003 The Queens Golden Jubilee Medal was presented to Mike in recognition of
outstanding community service. Mike was selected for the Artscan 2004 Showcase. This showcase features a dozen artists
each year and is attended by educators from Western Canada. Mike was nominated for Parlimentary Poet Laureate in 2006.
The PPL role is to encourage and promote the importance of literature, culture, and language in Canadian society. Then
in 2007 his book "Rhymes & Damn Lies" was awarded the Will Rogers Medallion Award for Cowboy Poetry Books.
This is just inkling of the many accomplishments in Mike's life when it comes to promoting and preserving cowboy
heritage ... the reason for his receiving the Joe Marten Memorial Award.

The 11th Annual Spirit of the West Cruise
Hawaii - January 3th to 18th, 2012 on the Golden Princess!!
|
|
We returned to the Cariboo late last month after a truly wonderful and relaxing holiday with Billie and Hugh McLennan
and over 100 other great folks that joined us on the 11th Annual Spirit of the West Cruise! We were spoiled rotten on
the Golden Princess for 14 days as we sailed from LA to Hawaii and back. After enjoying a lot of sun, and 20 degree
plus days, it was a bit of shock to get out of the truck at minus 22 ... brrrrr!! Harry, our ranch sitter, took a photo
of the thermometer one morning when it read minus 40.7 - glad we missed that :-)
Hopefully some of you were able to follow us on our web site, but if you didn't, and would like to see where we went,
and what we did, you can find a bunch of photos on our diary pages - one at www.hugh-mclennan.com and one at
www.meadowsprings.com. Unfortunately

At least Kathy got to pat a horse!

we didn't get a chance to go horseback riding anywhere, but we did have a great private group outing at the Parker Ranch
- the biggest ranch in North America ... and at least Kathy got to pat a horse!
The Parker Ranch
On a sea day before we arrived in Hawaii, Jim Bell, our cruise director, gave a great presentation on the ranch which
included a video of the ranch. Jim had also dug up their financial statement which we found very interesting as the
ranch is now a Trust, and donates money to charity every year.
One of the interesting parts for me, as president of the BC Cowboy Heritage Society, was the fact that they have the same
vision as us

in keeping their Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy) heritage alive. We were lucky enough to meet, and hear presentations by
Anthony Roberts (society facilitator) and Dr Billy Bergin (founding president). As of April 2011, the Society's home
and museum, called the Paniolo Cultural Center, is in the Pukalani Stables, at the Parker Ranch. These stables are
referred to as, "one of the oldest and most beloved gems of the Big Island ranching community", and it is here that we
were treated to a wonderful BBQ lunch.
Keoki Wood, manager / cow boss of the Parker Ranch Cattle division, gave an excellent presentation on the Parker Ranch itself

breeding programs, pasture use, medical/disease problems, etc, etc. In past years many of the Parker Ranch cattle came
to the Cariboo by freighter for summer grazing. Today the cattle are flown on 747s to the mainland USA.

The rest of the cruise
The Parker Ranch was only one day of the 14. The other 13 days were a whole lot of R & R, sun and fun, mega and awesome
food, lots of drinks, and some beautiful sightseeing on four of the Islands of Hawaii.
There are a few really special things, besides the Parker Ranch tour, that make this group cruise so much more

fun. We
had our own private sing-a-longs with some great western music and cowboy poetry under the stars - Hugh and the Spirit
of the West on Board Band even took over a hall way on the ship, two different days, and had a jam session for us.
Everyone in the group got the 2012 Spirit of the West tee-shirt (every year is a different colour) which we all wear one day
for a group photo (see below). The networking is great, too ... we met a lot new folks as well as people we had come to know
from past crusies, and everyone is like minded ... from ranching back grounds or at least have a love for the western way
of life.
