From the Editors
Kathy and Mark McMillan
Things have been happening! It's been a very busy, and very successful Spring! The Kamloops Cowboy Festival was
once again a great success, and the feedback has been very positive! You can read a review here.
In May, Friday the 13th was a great day ... or at least the evening was. That was the night of the Mike Puhallo Benefit
Concert which was a sold out show and an awesome concert - 850 tickets were sold! You can read a review here.
You'll find reviews on three new CDs below! Seems everyone picked the same time frame to put out their new work.
Check them out: Gary Fjellgaard, Tim Hus,
and Horse Crazy. They're all wonderful.
Liz Twan was the recipient of the Joe Marten Memorial Award for the Presevation of Cowboy Heritage at this year's Festival
and it couldn't have gone to a more deserving person. Read the story here.
The Country 103 Rising Star Showcase was super! Contestants came from far and wide and the talent was super!
See the details here.
From Kathy and I the good news is that we'll be joining Billie and Hugh, and the group of Spirit of the West Radio Show
listeners on their 2012 cruise! Yee ha!! Off to Hawaii for 14 days! With a tour of the World's largest cattle ranch,
the Parker Ranch ... we're not too excited :-) ... See the details here.

Mike Puhallo BCCHS President
This is a message from Shar Puhallo, Mike's daughter, May, 2011
After a winter that took forever to retreat, I find myself in a late spring with four wily horses to ride. Now I trust
my grey mare with my life, but the other three have really never been handled by anyone but my dad. So, it's going to
be a busy and challenging spring. Don't worry - he's given me pointers on how each one of them likes to jump in the
spring. His big gelding has enough hang time to think about spurring or what you want for lunch and his mares are
quick with a guaranteed quick direction change ... His best advice was to go slow with the filly that busted his knee
last spring - to which I replied, "yes, boss."
The fifteenth annual Kamloops Cowboy Festival was very successful. My dad was there for Friday and Saturday amidst his
time off from Cancer treatment and he was pretty happy with how things rolled out. Once again the volunteers, exhibitors,
and entertainers did an outstanding job. The festival was also the start of some fundraising efforts for my folks -
which really made my dad feel cared about; he said he felt commended and valued (so thank you to everyone who put
that together - it was very thoughtful).
These days, we're busy enjoying our time as a family and revelling in all of the little things that have really come to
be the big things at this point. We're also looking forward to getting Mike's seventh book to the publisher, so look for
"Cowboy Up" to be available before next year's festival. Once again, cowboy cartoonist Wendy Liddle is hard at work
with her creativity running wild with illustrating the new book.
The last 16 years has been quite a ride. My dad's heart has been with all of the directors, volunteers, and members who
will be contributing to next year's festival. Since he's not able to be helping with the planning, his best advice for
when figuring out exactly what he did is just to take it slow (same as the advice he gave to me for learning to handle
that damn filly).
I wish you all an amazing spring - when you go out riding squeeze your legs tight around your ride, breath it in and
exhale with a smile (that's cowboy yoga).

Kamloops Cowboy Festival 2011 Review
15th ANNUAL KAMLOOPS COWBOY FESTIVAL
March 10-13, 2011
All photos by Donna or Jerry unless otherwise stated
|
What was the best part of the 15th Annual Kamloops Cowboy Festival? I guess my answer has to be the whole Festival ...
there was so much, and everything seemed to be at the top of someone's list. It was four days of good cowboy entertainment,
shopping, looking, and socializing, all of which seemed to be nothing but fun. Maybe that's why two tour buses from Alberta
show up for the weekend.
Entertainment started off on Thursday and carried on through till Sunday night. As well as the four stages at the Festival
itself, eight other locations around Kamloops had performers doing sets this year. There were also ten different workshops
going on at the Festival - song and poetry writing, bass guitar, vet stories, and "Reel cowboys of Western Film".

|
|
We just got home and already we've had so much positive feedback ... I sure can't use everyone's comments here as I'd be out of
room before I got started. Here's one from someone that wasn't even at the Festival this year ... Ol' Ugly! He this got right
after the Festival and sent it to me:
"I was sitting here at my computer minding
my business and an email showed up from Almeda Bradshaw (I had mentioned Kamloops to her and told her about the Rising Star
competition). She was in your "Rising Star" competition. Wow, compliments flying from her every which way. She loved the
competition; she loved the set up and the stages made her envious, she said. She sat in both places and was going on about
sight lines and sound being perfect. (Like Ol' Ugly understands that kind of stuff??) I asked her what she thought of the
volunteers and she said she never really noticed until Belinda Gail took her out to lunch and a car drove them to the restaurant
and then came and picked them up again. I guess if things are running smoothly, and you don't really notice volunteers, then
they are doing a great job."

The Country 103 Rising Star Show Case was very popular and every time I looked at the audience seated in front of the stage
there wasn't a seat to be had. This carried right through to the finals on Sunday on the main stage - it was packed, and
with no wonder as the talent was super. The kids pulled it off in both the poet and musician categories, with 16 year old
Kristyn Harris from Texas winning as a singer, and 9 year old Jayden Stafford, from Fort St John taking the top spot as a
Cowboy Poet. The scores were so close!!

Volunteer Coordinators Report - May 2011
Festival 2011 was yet another successful event, thanks to all who contributed their time and efforts. Thanks to word
of mouth and Volunteer Kamloops, we manage to maintain our volunteers at 115. We were very close to 3000 hours of
volunteer time this year. Shuttle drivers make a huge contribution - always on call to entertainers and patrons.
They didn't let anyone walk anywhere. Once again the girl guides provided great food all day. Dinner theatres are
popular and always well attended. We enjoy a great location - Kamloops Town Lodge and Calvary Community Church - our
two venues always go above and beyond to ensure everything goes off without a hitch. The Horse Barn has been there for
us all the way. They offer and support us adding another dimension to the festival. They allow us to invade their
premises with music and multi-numbers of western folks. Local motels conveniently located are on board with
complimentary rooms for entertainers. I have mentioned so few - our appreciation for advertising and putting the word
out to people we can't reach. To all of you, our sincere appreciation. We do thank all of our contributors - the
Festival is what it is because of you.

The Mike Puhallo Benefit Concert Review

Thanks to all who helped put on, and to those who atttended, the Mike Puhallo Benefit Concert
It was a sold out show on Friday the 13th of May and over 800 people enjoyed a pretty spectacular Cowboy Concert, and
all for a great cause ... it was the Mike Puhallo Benefit Cowboy Concert with proceeds going to the Puhallo Family and
the Cancer Center for the Southern Interior (Kelowna). Allen Christie came in from Alberta and Bud Webb came up
from Mission to spend about an hour singing for folks as they took their seats and waited for the 7:00 pm start.
Both Mike's and Linda's family members (and there's lots of them) were present and their daughter Sharlene was introduced by the
evening MC, Hugh McLennan, to start the evening off with a thank you speech. I followed with some special thanks to the
sponsors, and the BC Cowboy Heritage Society presented a mounted canvas photo of Mike to his family ... the same photo
used for the concert poster (left), and probably the one that will be used for next year's Kamloops Cowboy Festival poster.
|
|
In the first segment Hugh read some of Mike's poems in between sets by the concert musicians which included Matt Johnston,
Butch Falk, and Shirley Field. Cowboy Poet Dave Longworth did a wonderful job of reading Mike's poetry in his set. During the
intermission folks got to enjoy coffee and some goody trays that relatives put together to raise for some additional
funds. Mike's books of poetry were hot selling items at the "General Store" and the other performers did well on product
sales, too.
After the intermission Gary Fjellgaard did an outstanding 45 minute set and Tim Hus, with his band, kept toes tappin',
or more likely the feet stompin' for another 45 minutes. Part way through his set Tim called Gary back out on stage
and they sang "The Man With the Big Hat" as a duet. Riley Tubbs kept the beat with his big doghouse bass, and Billie
MacInnis helped Tim out with some electric guitar and some great fiddle playing. They wrapped up the show at 10:00pm.

A message that Shar Puhallo, Mike's Daughter, read at the Benefit Concert.
A Thank you
|
|
I was going on 17 when my dad quit driving a steel truck for a living to follow his dream and be a full time cowboy poet.
I remember coming home from school, feeling a slight amount of shock at hearing the news, but never doubting that he would
find success and never take another job as a truck driver. That's when my dad taught me the meaning of believing in
yourself. I don't have to tell you he found success. For the past dozen years, he's been doing exactly what he loves
doing and making a modest living at it.
Although he wasn't able to attend, I think hearing about the full house at the Calvary Community Church for his benefit
concert really moved him and gave him a tremendous feeling of pride as well as gratitude.
The news of my dad's battle with cancer may have come recently to some of you. I can tell you that after sharing a
quiet family Christmas in December, Mike was diagnosed with stage IV brain cancer in the first week of January; it
wasn't preceded by any headaches or other alerting warning signs. Since then, we've been adapting quickly as a family.
And you can bet that Mike met this battle with his boots and spurs on.
In the past five months my dad has taught me new meanings for the words optimistic and spirit. His battle with cancer
has been a private one up until now, because that is what he wanted. He didn't want pity and he didn't want well wishes,
because he truly believed he could ride this out.

He's a cowboy not accustomed to asking for help, but the fundraising efforts of the BC Cowboy Heritage Society have
been a blessing and have given my parents much needed relief during this challenging time. On behalf of my dad, my mom
and our family, I would like to thank everyone who came to support the benefit. The feeling of community absolutely
filled that church, so thank you for sharing in that night. Our family would like to thank all of the media and
sponsors who were so incredibly generous. We'd also like to thank the amazing entertainers who came together for the
benefit, because my dad counts them all as true friends and their support has been very
|
|
uplifting for all of us.
Finally, to the BC Cowboy Heritage Society - thank you for organizing and promoting the benefit. Mark and Kathy
McMillan have been pillars of support and my dad couldn't ask for better friends. Thank you all - what an incredible night!
Always, Shar Puhallo

Joe Marten Memorial Award for the Preservation of Cowboy Heritage in BC
The recipient for 2011 is a very deserving person ...
Liz Twan Receives Award for Preserving Cowboy Heritage
In the heart of Cowboy Country, at the Alkali Lake Ranch in BC's Chilcotin, you can find an incredibly talented
photographer and writer by the name of Liz Twan. You might also find her name on articles in various ranching and
cowboy magazines like Canadian Cowboy Country, Beef in BC, and Country Life. Liz also writes a regular column called
Cattle Fodder in the Williams Lake Tribune.
In 2008 Liz put together a coffee table book called "Cowboys, Characters, and Critters" which features over 170 of her
ranch related photos, including a few amazing wildlife shots. Two of her rodeo photos were chosen for the highly sought
after collector series, Williams Lake Stampede Posters, in 2009 and 2010. At the Canadian Cowboy Country magazine
sponsored Kamloops Cowboy Festival Art of the West Show and Sale, Liz took home 2nd place prize money in the photography
section in 2008, and won the blue ribbon for 1st place in 2009, 2010, and 2011. Her photos have also been seen on
Global TV's Weather Window, and have been put to good use on brochures to promote tourism.
All this just touches on Liz's talents and it was no surprise, except to Liz herself, that the BC Cowboy Heritage Society
selected her as the recipient of the Joe Marten Memorial Award for the Preservation of Cowboy Heritage in the Province of
British Columbia. With her pen and her camera she has done an amazing job of recording ranch life and local history to
promote the cowboy way of life, in spite of her handicap with Parkinson's disease. Congratulations Liz Twan!

Tim Hus - New CD - "Hockeytown"
Review by Mark McMillan
|
|
|
12 tracks and they're all Tim Hus originals! After hearing this CD you can understand why Stompin' Tom Connors said, "I've been
looking for 30 years for a young guy who's proud to write songs about our country. I'd like to pass the torch to Tim Hus".
Corb Lund kinda said it all too, "Tim's awesome. He's one of my favorite Canadian songwriters. Nobody captures the
rough-and-ready frontier imagery better than him."
Well Tim and his band did an awesome job at the Mike Puhallo Benefit Concert and it was here that a lot folks got to take
home this new CD ... and they won't be disappointed.
|
|
Tim produced this CD himself and did a fine job. Not only are the songs "real", but the mix of instruments and back
ground vocals is great. Riley does a couple of great bass runs in Red River Flood and there's a great mix of a good many
other instruments throughout the CD.
If you're from Saskatchewan you'll probably relate to "Saskatchewan Son-of-a-Gun", and if you like country music you'll
probably enjoy Tim's song "Home of Hank Snow". I personally couldn't agree more with Tim when I listen to the words to "Country
Music Lament" as he talks about the new music that they call country today. Good job Tim!
Hunters you might think that "Sasquatch Hunter" is a pretty cool song ... with all the hunting he's done, though, I can't
figure out why he doesn't have a Sasquatch mount hanging on his wall yet - good luck Tim!
A must have CD for anyone that likes Tim Hus and / or good music! You find the information to order a
copy at:

Gary Fjellgaard - New CD - "The Collection"
Review by Mark McMillan
|
|
I've always liked Gary's CDs for the same reason I've liked running the sound board for him. He likes the vocals up front
and the background exactly where it's supposed to be - in the background! I also thought that it would be great if
Gary would produce a CD that was just him and his guitar ... well I guess I wasn't the only one that thought that as
Gary says he often got asked at concerts, "When are you going to record a CD with just you and your guitar?"
Well it's here folks - he did it. 15 wonderful tracks recorded live at St Andrew's Church in Nanaimo, BC. They are all
his own songs, too, except one, the traditional favorite, "Streets of Laredo".
|
|
|
The songs are all Cowboy songs, and they're some of Gary's favorites, which of course are also some of our favorites.
Gary says that they were recorded the same way they were written with just guitar and voice and the CD was inspired by the
"indomitable spirit of the cowboy and the western lifestyle".
A must have CD for all that collect cowboy tunes and/or are a Gary Fjellgaard fan! You find the information to order a
copy at:
www.fjellgaard.bc.ca

Horse Crazy - New CD - "My Horse Knows the Way Home"
Review by Mark McMillan
|
|
|
Knowing these girls I didn't expect anything but good when I first listened to this new CD ... and I was right, it's great.
I think one could say the same about all these songs that RW Hampton said about his song that Horse Crazy recorded, "That's
the way that song ought to be done!".
Harmony! I love listening to a good song with good harmony ... well out of the 13 tracks on this CD you can't find a track
that doesn't fit that description. Add the great instrumentals and background music and this is another super CD from the
Horse Crazy girls.
|
|
You'll probably know some of the names credited for writing the songs they picked, too ... some of them are even Canadian!!
Allen Christie, Jim Reader, and Tim Hus are all favorites here and Dave McLure is sure no stranger. Mike Fleming's song,
"Hey Conductor" has been a favorite of mine since I heard him do it at the Kamloops Cowboy Festival about 10 years ago
(and he'll be back here in 2012)!
My favorites on this CD? Well that's a tough one ... I really like the way Jennifer sings "Another Cowboy song", Lauralee
did a super job of penning and singing "Home Place", and I'm sure Michael Fleming would be pleased with the way the girls
do "Hey Conductor".
If you buy this CD you get all three girls on all 13 tracks. Find the information on this CD, and how to order a copy at:

First bull I'd ever tried,

It's hard to believe it all began,
