From the Editors
Kathy and Mark McMillan
Its Festival Time!
Hard to believe we've waited a whole year for the Annual Kamloops Cowboy Festival, but
we have, and it's looking good. This year the Downtown Bussinesses and a couple of other
places have jumped in on the fun - and we're happy to welcome them.
Two Kamloops and area businesses are even throwing special "Welcome to Cowboy Festival"
parties on the Thursday evening! The South Thompson Inn and Guest Ranch will have a
buffet dinner and entertainment by Tim Hus in their Riverfront Somerset banquet room
(reservations are appreciated). The Plaza Heritage Hotel will feature Joni Harms and
a steak dinner & drink special in their Rocksalt Restaurant and Bar (no cover charge).
See the Thursday Evening article.
The week before Festival, "Cowboy Heritage Week", sounds like fun Downtown as the
Downtown Businesses get ready to give away a bunch of prizes to folks that enter their
"Prize Roundup". See the Downtown article.
While you're their check out the open mic locations Downtown, too. On
Thursday, Friday, and Saturday

From the Desk of El Presidenté
Mike Puhallo
BCCHS Presidents Report - Festival 2010
I am honoured to invite and welcome everyone, to Canada’s Original Cowtown and the
fourteenth annual, Kamloops Cowboy Festival.
If advance ticket sales are any indication, we are on track for another incredible
festival. (Early bird ticket receipts from November to February are about 40% above
last year!)
I want to express my deep appreciation to all the; poets, musicians, cowboy artists
& artisans, exhibitors, volunteers, sponsors and The BC Cowboy Heritage Society
board members, who have contributed to making this the best little cowboy fest, in
the whole darn west! Most of all I want to thank the fans and supporters who keep
showing up in ever increasing numbers from all over North America! It is your
enthusiastic support that keeps the spirit and culture of the West alive!

2010 Art of the West Show and Sale
Sponsored by Canadian Cowboy Country magazine
Once again we are pleased to present this juried art show and sale made possible by our
good friends at Canadian Cowboy Country magazine. The show will present flatwork,
sculpture, saddle making and photography with an emphasis on Western life and themes.
Most of our judges will be drawn from the ranching community but with trained artists
thrown in to point out the technical merits of each piece. Once again we invite the
public to vote on their favourite painting or drawing to determine the Peoples' Choice
Award. This year's show includes pieces from some of the very best in Canadian Western
art and we are very proud of the caliber of the show.
The saddle show, as part of the art show, will once again have both professional and
amateur classes. We are very pleased to have Mr. Chuck Stormes, one of Canada's finest
saddle makers, once again judge the show. If saddles are entered from all of the saddle
makers that, to date, have expressed interest in the show, then it should be another
awesome show of talent.
Though not easy to find, the Art of the West Show is definitely not to be missed. Follow
the hallway to its end, just below the Restaurant and across from the waterfalls.

The Festival Tradeshow
|
|
We would like to give a real warm welcome to Helen and Red Allan, the new chairmen
of the Festival Tradeshow. They say they're looking forward to looking after this very
important part of the Festival and are looking forward to seeing all the past exhibitors
again and to meetiing all the newsones!
Neither Helen, nor Red are new at the game as they have both spent countless hours the
last couple of years helping David with the tradeshow ... there's no doubt that if
you're a past exhibitor you'll know Helen and Red.
|

Red and Helen Allan
|
|
Last year we said "biggest and best yet" and this year we can say it again, as we have
51 exhibitors that have signed up at the time of this newslatter. Last year David had
rearranged the floor plan, and it worked out well, so we're sticking to it again this
year.
We have a really good variety of products again this year and can once again say that we
truly have something for everyone. We have everything from art, books, and clothing,
to real estate, saddles and silver. There are collectables and home décor, jewelry,
stirrups, and photographers. See below for a full list of exhibitors and please come
on in and browse. We hope you will be as pleased with this years' line up as we are
and we hope you patronize as many as you can, to let them know what a great asset they
are to the Kamloops Cowboy Festival!
A note in closing, as the newsletter goes on-line; one of our long-standing exhibitors
is in doubt for this year's show. Cowboys’ Choice may not be at the show due to serious
family health matters. Our thoughts and prayers go out to Vern and Mona Elliot and
their families as we wish the very best for them.
Hours for the Festival Trade Show are:
Friday, March 12th - 12:00 PM to 6:45 PM

Volunteer Message Festival 2010
As I write our annual welcome on behalf of the coordinators and the many volunteers
ready to welcome everyone to yet another festival, I am reminded how quickly the years
pass and how many guests and volunteers have come through our doors. Our venues have
served us well with acoustics that compliment our entertainers and the welcoming
surroundings. Put all of this together with great buffets, non-stop entertainment
and plenty to see and do, and you are bound to have a great time. We're looking
forward to showing you the same good time you’ve come to expect from us. Thank you all
for coming and have a great weekend.

The Country 103 Rising Star Showcase
CJKC, Country 103 will once again sponsor the Rising Star Showcase. Each year we've found
new, extremely worthy, main stage entertainers for the following year’s Festival - in
fact we have four main stage performers this year, that were rising stars last year -
two were winners, and two were not. That gives a pretty good indication as to the quality
of performers that enter this competition.
There are two different categories - one for Cowboy Poets and one for Western Musicians.
The two categories are judged separately and there are separate cash prizes - $1000 for
first place and $500 for both second and third place in both categories.
This year we'll be using two stages - one in the Festival Trade Show area and the other
in the Fireside Room at the Church. Sunday the three finalists from both categories will
perform on the main stage in the Dinner Theatre at 3:00 PM. This is a special Rising Star
Showcase and will be hosted by Tiffany Dowhan and Tim Hus.
At this point in time we are still accepting applications for contestants. See

This article ran in the last issue but we're leaving it in, in case you missed it!
Joe Marten Memorial Award for the Preservation of Cowboy Heritage in BC
We have picked the recipient for 2010, another very deserving Saddle Maker, Andy Knight.
|
|
|
Andy Knight has been building custom saddles for over three decades and
since 1991 he's been building and using his own saddle tress. When asked how many saddles
he has built Andy's reply was, "I am not sure but around the 700 mark." He also says this
about his everyday job as a saddle maker, "I am so blessed to be able to earn a living
working in a trade that I still find enjoyable and challenging. Going to work is still fun".
With his credibility in the world of saddle makers Andy could build, and has built, saddles
for anyone; movie sets, professional horse trainers, clinicians, dignitaries,
etc, but he still says that he enjoys making working cowboy rigs the most. I think this is
probably because he knows that it's these saddles that will be used and appreciated the most.
|
|
Andy Knight was born in England in 1956 and immigrated to Canada with his
family in 1968. He discovered western Canada (Alberta) in 1973 and moved to the Calgary area.
Here he spent his early days working for Tex-Tan Kenways on the saddle making assembly line,
where he learned his basic saddlemaking skills. The Calgary area was also where Andy built
his first custom saddle ... for then Canadian Champion calf roper Jim Gladstone. While living
in Alberta Andy had the privilege to spend some time with saddlemaker Ernie Polson who would
critique his saddles and also let him use his sewing machine.
In the summer of 1975 Andy moved to Pink Mountain in northern BC where he worked on a ranch.
That was the beginning of a love affair with the north that continues to this day. He
continued to build saddles and work on different ranches and even found time to get married,
in 1977 to Ruth Roes.
|
|
|
At this time Andy was building saddles under the "Evergreen Saddle Co" name. He got his
first trophy saddle contract in 1982 for the NRA year end saddle awards. He was supplementing
his income by spending the winters in the bush working as a faller, while the whole time
dreaming about opening his own saddle shop in the south.
1986 saw the young Knight family (Andy, Ruth, Tracy, and Tania) move to the Nicola Valley
where Knights Saddlery was officially established in the back of D & G Western Outdoors.
Local cowboys and ranchers started ordering saddles.
In 1987 the saddle shop expanded to its own space in downtown Merritt and in 1989 Knights
Saddlery bought its own premises. The saddle shop now had lots of space and started selling
western wear and horse gear. The sign outside read "Knights Western Emporium". Here the
demand for Andy's saddles was so great that he had to hire two other saddlemakers.
During this period Andy had the privilege of getting to work with some of North Americas
top horseman ... and continues to do so today. This helped him immensely with both his
horsemanship and saddlemaking.
Having trouble getting quality saddle trees made Andy look into learning to build his own and
in 1990 he went to Oregon to learn how from Todd McGiffin. Since 1991 all "Knight" saddles
have been built on Andy's own trees.
January 1st, 1992 a third daughter, Tessa, was added to the.
1999 Andy started to get weary of the retail business and the hassle of having employees. He
also found that it was taking too much time away from saddlemaking so he moved the shop to
his home. With the shop attached to the house Andy finds it almost too easy to "go to work"!
Andy's drive to improve and hone his skills as a saddlemaker are stronger today than when
he started. He has made saddles, and continues to work with, quite a number of professional
horse trainers and clinicians; Harry Whitney, Josh Nichol, Kevin Pole, Jonathan Field, and
Glen Stewart, to name a few. Quite a few of his saddles have gone to Europe and now it seems
about half of his saddles go to the US.
He has shown and attended the Cowboy Symposium in Ruidoso, New Mexico; has shown,
by invitation, at the Elko Museum, in Nevada; and recently he was invited to Switzerland
and Germany to show and give saddle fitting demonstrations.
When asked if he considered himself a traditional saddlemaker he replied, "I am not sure what
you mean, however, I believe that everything I do relating to saddlemaking needs to be
subject to constant review to consider whether it can be improved.
To see past recipients of the Joe Marten Memorial Award go to the
Heritage Award page.

Heading to Elko
A seed planted in the desert,
some twenty six years ago,
advertised as;
A gathering of Cowboy poets,
No telling, if any would show?
They were, cautiously optimistic,
they rented a tiny hall,
and rustled up some chairs,
a couple dozen in all.
I hear, forty came the first year,
and the idea soon took hold.
Now folks gather by the thousands,
where cowboy rhymes are told.
Mike Puhallo
PS There are several hundred cowboy poetry gatherings throughout Canada and USA,
but the biggest and best, is still the National Cowboy Gathering in Elko Nevada, where it
all started 26 years ago. I am honoured to be one of the featured performers at Elko this
year!
