From the Editors
Kathy and Mark McMillan
The winter months are starting out great - nice and warm.
It does seem like January or February though, because it
seems that the Kamloops Cowboy Festival is right around
the corner, and close it is. I'm amazed at how many inquireies
we had already, and especially at how many tickets we've sold and
the number of rooms that have been spoken for to date! There are
already three tour bus companies selling packages to folks in
Alberta. Read the more about the Festival
in this newsletter.
The BC Cattlemen Convention will be held in 100 Mile House
next year and we'll share a little info with you in this newsletter
as to who will be entertaining at both the Saturday night dance
and the Friday night dinner / auction.
To name few of the many highlights -
we're please to announce that the Cariboo Country Film
Festival will go again this year. See the
Film Festival article.
The Country 103 Rising Star Showcase brings in new
talent again for 2008. See the Rising
Star article. Chuck Stormes will do a workshop at
this year's Festival as
well as judge the saddles in The Art of the West Exhibition
and Sale, sponsored by Canadian Cowboy Country magazine. You
can read more about Chuck Stormes
in this newsletter.

From the Desk of El Presidenté
Mike Puhallo
Presidents Report, BCCHS, December, 2007
In 2008 The Province of British Columbia celebrates the 150 year
anniversary of the proclamation of BC as a crown colony. Kamloops
is certainly the most appropriate place to begin the festivities,
because this is where it really began. The gold gathered here by
Donald McLean in trading with the local First Nations, was the spark
that ignited the Frazer River Gold Rush and set our history in motion.
The gold rush in turn created the demand for beef and lead to the
establishment of our ranching industry.
For the last dozen years or so the members of The BC Cowboy
Heritage Society have worked to preserve and celebrate British
Columbia's Western Heritage. Now it looks like all of BC is
preparing to join us in celebrating that legacy.
Things are looking good for the 2008 Kamloops Cowboy Festival,
with three tour bus companies from Alberta committed and advance
ticket sales well ahead of last year's record pace. Our Cowboy
Christmas Concerts have also seen new attendance records and we
are looking forward to an several cowboy concerts in February
leading up to the Festival. Once again the Kamloops Museum will
be hosting a Western Heritage Lecture series and The Kamloops Art
Gallery will be hosting a Western Art Show for local Artists.
Take a deep seat and keep your mind in the middle, when the gate
opens it is going to get interesting!

BC Cowboy Heritage Society Press Release
by Mike puhallo, November, 2007
2008 Kamloops Cowboy Festival March 7th, 8th, & 9th 2008
Celebrating 150 years as Canada's Original Cowtown!
In 1858:
- The Crown Colony of British Columbia was established,
- The Cariboo Gold Rush began.
- BC's Cattle Ranching industry was born.
- Kamloops established its place as the hub of
British Columbia's Ranching industry.
The Kamloops Cowboy Festival began a dozen years ago, as
a celebration of this heritage. It has gone on to establish
a reputation as one of the most prestigious Western Heritage
events anywhere, attracting visitors, artists and entertainers
from across North America and beyond!
Not only does The Kamloops Cowboy Festival attract individuals -
It also attracts other events. This year both The Canadian
Professional Rodeo Assn. (West Of The Rockies Tour) and the BC
Rodeo Assn. will be holding Spring Committee Meetings in Kamloops
so their delegates can also attend the Cowboy Festival. The
Kamloops Art Gallery and The Kamloops Museum and Archives each
plan to host events in conjunction with the Festival.
The Kamloops Cowboy Festival currently uses both Calvary
Community Church and Forsters Convention Centre to host; four
feature concerts, three days of nonstop cowboy poetry and western
music, an Invitational Western Art Show, A Western Art and Gear
Trade Show, A Cariboo Country Film Festival, The BC Cowboy Hall
of Fame Induction Ceremonies, and a couple of special performances
for volunteers and weekend pass holders only. There is also a
variety of workshops and Jam Sessions.
It is a jam packed weekend!
Advance ticket sales are taking off already! At this moment
most of the acts appearing at this year's festival have been
booked but none of the schedules drawn up yet. So no
announcements have been made as to who will be appearing or
when, but we already have approximately 200 weekend passes

Western Art and Gear Show
Although it's was too early to list the exhibitors, we
can tell you this: there is a tremenous amount of interest,
some of last years exhibitors said they'll be back (while still
at the 2007 Festival), and the tradeshow area will be a little
larger this year - all in all it looks like it should be another
super Western Art and Gear Show. Here's a few of the 2008 exhibitors:
- Coyote Crossing
- Cariboo Stirrups
- Jeremy Willis Entertainment
- Peter Grauer
- Wildechoes
- M-TE Stitches
- The Western Canada Heritage Centre Assoc.
- BC Cattlemen Convention Committee
- The Canadian Professional Rodeo Assn.
- Sweetwater Bronze
- Lazy B Stock Horse Leather
- Cariboo Saddlery
- Cowboys' Choice
- Cowboy Classic Equipment
Art of the West Exhibition and Sale
A big thank you to Canadian Cowboy Country magazine
for sponsering this show. Also a big thank you to Chuck
Stormes for agreeing to come and judge the show - as well as
agrreing to put on one of the Festival workshops. It's early yet,
so we can't give you a list of entries but there has been a lot
of interest, from artists, saddlemakers, and bronze scultptures.
The addition of the latter two should make for an awesome show!

Dear Slim,
Woke up this mornin' an' it shore was cold! Winter was a bit
slow gettin' here but it's coming. No snow yet.
Jest was out lookin' at stuff for Christmas with my better
half yesterday and we stopped at my favourite store The
Horse Barn. Everybody welcomed us with smiles and chat. They
have so much new and interesting stock in there, I coulda
spent 2 days looking at it all. The wife was lookin' at the
Gallery and Giftware upstairs. She wants to redecorate our
home! They have stuff there for every room in the house! Martha
Stewart could do up a western home proud with all what they have.
They are having a "Local Artist's Day" on Sunday Dec 2/07. John
Schnurrenberger, Arnold Mosley, Liz Mitten-Ryan, Mike Puhallo,
and Gary Gottfriedson will be in the store to visit with everyone
and sign books for you. I'll be there and it sure would be nice
if you came, Slim.
Thinkin' about Mike makes me remember to pick up my Cowboy Festival
tickets, too.
Gotta go now,
Take care,
Bubba

The Country 103 Rising Star Showcase
This years looks like it'll be another great show. The fact
that we have picked four of our 2008 mainstage peformers from
the 2007 Rising Star Showcase should give an idea of the
amount of great talent we see in this competition. We have
already received entries in both the music and poetry catagories
and encourage any interested performers to enter soon, as the
entries are taken on a first come first serve basis. We will
accept a maximum of eight entries in each catagory. If you are
interested, or know someone that you think might be, simply
send us an
email, or visit the Rising Star
page of this web site for details. Thanks again to CJKC

Workshops and Seminars planned for the 2008 Festival
We are far from putting together the schedule for then up-coming
but we do have lots of ideas - and if you look at our past record
I think you'll have to agree that our ideas usually turn into really
well liked workshops and seminars.
A few that we are sure of are ones tah tgo over so well every year
that we'll do them again - by request. Shiley Field's Yodelling
workshop could be run numerous time throughout the weekend to please
everyone but it will be held once for sure. Mike Puhallo will do
his "How to Promote your Product" workshop again, and we are honhoured
to have Chuck Stormes doing a talk on Saddles. Read more about
Chuck Stormes in this newsletter.
Some other ideas that we haven't confirmed as of yet are as follows.
We're hoping that Peter Grauer will do something on or around Billy
Miner. We have a few poets to choose from that could do a writing
workshop. Songwriting - well with the talent we have on stage there
should be no problem finding someone to do a seminar - same with pickin'.
Hats - we haven't talked to Vern but I'm sure he'll do something.
So with all that we should be able to please most folk's wishes and
we throw in a couple of surprises, too! Like Trick Roping ....
|
Cariboo Country Film Festival
We couldn't get any closer to our mandate, "To Promote and Preserve
Western Heritage", then by running Paul St Pierre's Cariboo
Country TV series - so that's what we're gonna do!
|
|
|
Last year we had a start with seven episodes that were donated by
CBC, which were great. Since then Paul has generously let us
borrow some of his old videos and we've converted them to DVDs.
Actually let me refraise that - A big thanks to Dale Scott who
put in many hours of frustration making the DVDs for us!! We now
have about 30 different episodes!
We'll be running these Cariboo Country TV series shows all
weekend in the Cariboo Country Film Festival. A great place
to sit and relax for a bit, and take in some fantasic, good old
fashioned movies!

The 8th Annual 100 Mile House Cowboy Concert
February 9th, 2008 in the Martin Exeter Hall, 100 Mile House, BC
Man - what a line-up! This will definitely be an entertaining
concert - or rather concerts. Yes, again this year there will
be two shows, a 2:00 PM Matinee and a 7:00 PM evening show. Tickets
for this show make great Christmas Stocking
Stuffers and you need to buy them early anyway, as this
concert always sells out early. To buy tickets the easiest way is to
email Mark at:
msprings@bcinternet.net or phone (250) 456-2425 for info. Why
would you want tickets? Well here's a little on who's performing:
|
| |
Frank Gleeson
|
The one and only Frank Gleeson. We're really happy to
hear that Frank is back in the world of entertaining! This
hilareous cowboy poet is the real thing - a rancher from
Williams Lake. His poetry has been a crowd favorite for
years. He is the only Canadian to have been invited to perform
at the National Cowboy Poetry Gathering in Elko, Nevead for a record
five times in a row! Hold on to your seats, take a deep breather,
and listen carefully - you have to listen quickly, too, as Frank
is known as the "Fastest and Funniest Cowboy Poet in the West"!
You can read a little more about Frank and hear some examples of
his poetry at:
www.cowboy-poet.com
|
|
|
Our very own Hugh McLennan - Host of the Spirit of the West
Radio Show. It's been a few years since Hugh performed in 100
Mile House but he's such a crowd favorite we asked him back.
Hugh will MC both shows and entertain, too. He's always got a
few good jokes up his sleeve and his list of Cowboy Poetry
is never ending. If you haven't heard Hugh before, and want to
hear his radio show, go to:
www.hugh-mclennan.com. Click on "The Spirit of the West"
to listen to the show.

|
Alan Moberg
|
Alan Moberg is certainly no stranger to the Cariboo as he has wrote,
and sung, about this area, and about BC in general, for well over
35 years! He is fairly new to the Cowboy Concerts, though, in fact
this will be his first for the BCCHS. He did perform at the Cariboo
Country Night Cowboy Concert in September, though, and went over so well
that there was no question we wanted him for the Annual 100 House Concert.
He agreed to come up in February and we are really looking forward to
hearing him again. Although Alan's web site is just about to have some
major changes you can read a bit about him and what he's done at:
www.alanmoberg.com. One of his best known songs in this area is one
that we've heard a lot - The Williams Lake Stampede. Alan also
introduced us to this next entertainer.
|
|
Ed Peekeekoot is known by a lot of folks in the 100 Mile House
area, too, as he used to play at both the 108 and the Hills. Alan Moberg
brought his name to our attention, and we heard some very high praise from
Gary Fjellgaard as well. The name Chet Atkins seems to come out every time
someone talks about Ed's guitar playing. For 10 years, Ed played in bands
in the Clearwater, BC area. He plays fiddle, banjo, dobro, and harmonica,
as well as guitar. Ed has developed a solo style performance that at turns
has people laughing, then crying. In recent years he has been working on
another style of "roots" music - the true roots of his own Cree heritage.
Ed's work has made its way across North America and into many different
countries, including Germany, Australia, Japan, Israel, England, South
Africa, and Taiwan - all this from his home base of Crofton, British Columbia.

Don't miss out on this Christmas Stocking
Stuffers idea. You can use the tickets from now
till February 9th for discounts or specials at Casa Romas
Restaurant, A & W, and The Hoof and Harness Restaurant in
100 Mile House.
A special thanks to CKBX - "The Wolf" and the 100 Mile Free Press

evening show, both in the Martin exeter Hall in 100 Mile House, BC.

Joe Marten Memorial Award for the Preservation of Cowboy Heritage in BC
The nominations came in, the selection committee has met,
and the recipient for 2008 has been selected. The problem is
that we've been sworn to secrecey so we can't let you know
who this recipient is. The committee decide to leave it as a
surprise, and will unveil the name on Saturday evening, March
8th, 2008, at the evening performance in the church, at the
Kamloops Cowboy Festival. You do know this person so you
probably won't want to miss the show!
If you know anyone that deserves the Joe Marten Memorial
Award for helping to preserve Cowboy Heritage in BC, have a look at the
Heritage Award page for details, including the rules and
guide lines, a page about Joe Marten, and a
printable nomination form.
The 2007 recipients were Paul St. Pierre and Tony Parrott.
Anyone can make a nomination. The deadline for nominations is November 1st
annually.

the 150th Anniversary of when the Crown Colony of British Columbia
was established!
Peter Bonter, who is a director of the BC Cattlemen's Association and the South
Cariboo Cattlemen's Association, will chair the Convention Committee.

auction, there will be entertainment by Horse Crazy, an extremely
energetic three piece cowgirl band from Washington State. See a
review of their latest CD in this newsletter -
Being as this will be a major event for 100 Mile House we contacted
the Mayor, Donna Barnett, and here's what she had to say:
On behalf of the District of 100 Mile House I welcome the 80th
Annual BC Cattlemen's Association AGM to 100 Mile House
June 12th, 13th & 14th, 2008.
2008 brings the 150th Birthday celebration to our
Province and we are excited to have the honour of
celebrating not only the BC 150 but 150 years of the
cattle industry in BC. The Cariboo Chilcotin is home
to many dedicated cattle ranchers. Some started many
years ago as a family ranch and continue to do so today.
Cattle ranching is an integral part of our agriculture
industry, community economics and social well being.
This is an industry we will continue to support.

Horse Crazy's New CD - Western Moon
A review by Mark McMillan
If Gene Autry could hear "Cowboy Blues" on this CD he'd roll over
in his grave! Roll over and start clapping that is - 'cause he'd love it.
Most of you have probably heard Horse Crazy at the Kamloops Cowboy
Festival over the last few years, and if you have you know what
kind of energy these girls exert on stage. Well it's hard to believe
that they could could show the same energy on a CD, but they did.
I've had the CD in my truck ever since I recieved it and have listened
to it over and over - and loved it every time! When you put the CD in the
player the very first song "Jingle in my Jeans" has your attention right
through to the very last song, the always favorite, "Tumbling Tumble Weeds".
|
|
There are twelve tracks of super harmony with guitar, fiddle, bass, and
mandolin as instrumentation. I hear this CD and it reassures me that we
will be in for another real treat at this year's Kamloops Cowboy Festival in
March 2008, and at the Annual BC Cattlemen Convention in June 2008!
See Cowboy Festival info here and
Cattlemen Convention info here.

Chuck Stormes to judge Art of the West Exhibition and Sale
and do a saddle workshop / seminar at the 2008 Festival
|
|
We're proud to be able to say that Chuck Stormes has agreed to
come to Kamloops to judge the Canadian Cowboy Country magazine
sponsored "Art of the West Exhibition and Sale". We're also really
happy to announce that while he is here he has agreed to do a
talk on saddles. For those of you who don't know
who Chuck Stormes is, here's a little about him.
|
|
|
His saddles have been on display at every major North American
exhibition of western crafts, and, in 1998 he was the first
recipient of the City of Calgary's Silver Spur Award for his
dedication to the preservation of western culture. Also in 1998,
he received the Will Rogers Award from the Academy of Western
Artists in Ft Worth, Texas. In 2005, Stormes was granted the
honourary title of Associate Curator by Calgary's Glenbow Museum.
Chuck is a founding member and past President of the Traditional
Cowboy Arts Association.
|
|
Chuck has a deep respect for the traditions of the trade that
have led him to a broad understanding not only of historical
saddles and their makers, but also of the tack and trappings
that evolved with them. He has been a consultant for several
private and public collections in Canada and the United States
and continues to lecture on the history of the tools of the
cowboy trade.
Building on a strong sense of tradition and a deep commitment
to fine craftsmanship, Stormes has developed an enviable
word-of-mouth reputation. His forty years in the trade have
resulted in an unmistakable personal style that clearly reflects
many influences.

|
Today, from a new shop next to the home he shares with his
wife, Heather, at the edge of Southern Alberta's foothills,
Stormes' saddles, built on trees of his own manufacture,
continue to speak eloquently for the superior bloodlines of
the old California vaquero saddles.

Cowboy Country TV Updates
|
Here's an up-date on the times, dates, and TV stations for the
episodes that were shot in BC this past year. First off an
appoligy for the times that were lsited in the last Cowboy Times -
the ones that were all wrong - Sorry! I just passed on what I was given.
Anyway here's what they say now.
The Meadow Springs feature is episode number is 309 and will air
the last week of December, 2007 on ACCESS and CLT. On CLT it will be on
November 29th at 1:30 PM and again December 1st at both 6:00 AM and 4:00 PM.
On Access, as best as I can tell from their web site, Cowboy Country TV
runs on Saturday at both 5:30 PM and 10:00 PM - it looks to me like they
are running episode #9 on Saturday December 1st, 2007.
The BC Cowboy Hall of Fame and the Museum of the Cariboo Chilcotin
airs in Episode 405 which will be in March, 2008. The XH Buffalo
Ranch airs in Episode 406, also in March 2008.
There are no firm dates for Broadcast Season 4 as yet... more than
likely they will start February 2nd, 2008. Hopefully we'll have
the days and times for you in our next newsletter which is due out in
mid February 2008. If not here are the web site addresses so you can
check the schedules.

Cowpoke Déjà Vous
Writing Cowboy humor,
might seem harder than before,
'cause there ain't much about this business,
that's funny anymore.
But all things being equal,
it's darn near always been that way,
between; droughts, floods and market slumps,
it didn't hardly ever pay.
From the crack of dawn each morning,
to the rising of the moon,
my life is an endless rerun,
of an old Cowpokes Cartoon.
Mike Puhallo
Dedicated to the memory of Ace Reid, the original cowboy
cartoonist, no matter how bad a wreck I get in, I know ol'
Ace was there ahead of me and drew a picture about it!
